Knysna, Plettenberg Bay and Sedgefield

We just had an action packed week driving along the Garden Route. The Garden Route is a stretch of the south-eastern coast of South Africa. It extends from Mossel Bay in the Western Cape to the Storm’s River in the Eastern Cape. The name comes from the ecologically diverse vegetation encountered here and the numerous lagoons and lakes dotted along the coast.

We started in a little Town called Knysna. The “k” is silent and it is pronounced “Nis-na”. The most well known attraction being the heads - two great sandstone cliffs guarding the mouth of the lagoon which connects the estuary with the sea. A lookout has been erected on the Eastern Head, with really spectacular views of the lagoon, Leisure Isle and Knysna. The Western Head is a privately owned nature Reserve - Featherbed Bay. The Knysna Lagoon is one of the few places along the coast and in the world that supports a oyster hatchery. And the Knysna oysters are reputedly among the best in the world. Too bad I'm not an oyster fan!

We also went to Brenton Beach in the late afternoon….literally kilometers of stunning deserted beach with soft white sand…it was really beautiful and we were able to watch the sunset.

The next day we headed east past Plettenberg bay to Bloukran's bridge. The bungy jump off this bridge is the world's highest commercial bridge bungy at 216 metres above the Bloukran's river. It is situated on the N2 Highway at the border between the Eastern and Western in the Tsitsikamma area of the garden route.

I was WAY too chicken to throw myself off it but Scott did so willingly. The walk out to the bridge was scary enough on this see through bouncy metal grate that is screwed into the underside of the bridge….it was all I could do to get across it.

We spent the afternoon on a beach in Plettenberg Bay.

After Knysna, we headed west to a little beachy surf town called Sedgefield. There’s a really popular hostel right on the beach there…we had a sea view room for $45 a night!

The hostel is attached to this awesome beach restaurant that makes great wood fired pizzas (best I have ever had) and build a huge roaring fire every night. They had a braai the first night that we got in on…a braai is a South African barbeque where they cook the meet over the coals of a fire. It was really tasty!
