My two days in Tikal were great. Tikal was about a 45 minute drive from Flores so the hotel I stayed at in the park runs a shuttle every morning from the airport. There was a group of doctors from the US that were volunteering in Antigua on the shuttle to the hotel...they flew up for the day for a tour with a guide from the hotel and there were 3 of us (Myself, Guy and Laura)that were all traveling alone.
The guide,Juan, that was there for the doctor's tour was quite funny and informative so I asked if I could join their day tour as I was just going to wander around by myself.
It was good fun, I learned a lot about Mayan history and it was nice to have some people to take some photos with me in them for a change.
After lunch/the tour and the doctor group left to go back to the airport for their evening flight back to Antigua; Guy, Laura and I hung out together for the rest of our stay.

Very anti-climactic and we were freezing up there. We did get a good show from the howler monkeys screaming throughout the forest. Apparently, the whole area has had rain every day for like 3 months and the day we arrived it was the first sunny day in forever so in the big picture we were pretty lucky.
Glorious sunrise!!! haha |
Paris pouring mohito one! |
We had a great meal at an Italian restaurant that makes it's own homemade pasta and has a rooftop terrace with views of the sunset over the lake. We drank a delicious pitcher of mohito that was on special....the saying for the night was "There's a mosquito in my mohito!' haha....you had to be there....then we hit a couple other little bars for more drinks before calling it a night.
Flores is a small peaceful little town that is an island on Lago Peten Itza connected to land by a causeway... you can walk around the whole place in 15-20 minutes. Nice cobblestone streets and good atmosphere here.
The streets are flooded because the lake is so high. |
Wednesday, I had to wake up early for a flight back to Guatemala city....I stayed out way too late the night before and ended up throwing my things in my bag and heading off to the airport in the same clothes as the night before.
The flight was delayed by 2 hours due to fog, which sucked, and by the time I arrived in San Pedro La Laguna on Lake Atitlan it was almost 4pm. I had a lazy day so far, slept in, watched a little TV and had cafe lattes and french toast in a little cafe. I've got 3 days to explore the area so need to decide what to do first!
